Friends of Facing History
The Facing History and Ourselves course will be starting its third year at Westborough High School. The first year was historical in its content and impact on students and teachers alike. The Facing History and Ourselves course has its beginnings in a Brookline, MA middle school over 30 years ago. It is now an internationally acclaimed curriculum and reaches 1.8 million students a year. The premise of the course is that "We need to and we can teach civic responsibility, tolerance and social action to young people.
The mission of the foundation is to support the Facing History and Ourselves curriculum at Westborough High School in Westborough Massachusetts, including students and teachers of the course. The Facing History and Ourselves course clarifies the correlation between history and the moral and ethical choices students shall make as global citizens.
The foundation through fundraising efforts will award scholarships to seniors at Westborough High School who have taken the Facing History and Ourselves course and who best exemplify the values and ideals of the course. The foundation will also award resources to teachers and resource support to the Facing History and Ourselves course at Westborough High School.
As a newly established foundation, we are committed to supporting the Facing History and Ourselves curriculum, scholarships to Westborough High School seniors who have taken the course, teacher training for the course and providing resources to aid the instruction of the class. We intend to raise monies through fundraising events. We view our foundation as a community project and hope that we will work together to attain the goals of our foundation and the Facing History and Ourselves national and international organizations.
The Westborough Friends of Facing History and Ourselves Foundation would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our 2013 scholarship winner, Mr. Michael Hillier. Michael was awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship at this year’s commencement ceremony. He will be attending the University of Rhode Island in the fall. Best wishes to Michael as he moves forward in his academic career.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Westborough School District Administrators, teachers, students and the community for their generous support of our first, annual fundraiser held in April. Our guest speaker, Rena Finder was inspirational and we were honored to have her as our guest. We are currently organizing and planning our next community event. Please read description below. We hope you will participate in this exciting community wide project.

FHAO Community Project:
Westborough and the surrounding communities are surprisingly and wonderfully diverse. On a walk down Main Street you may meet neighbors from India, China, Venezuela, Pakistan, Korea, Viet Nam, Brazil, France, Israel, Syria, Russia and so many more far away places as well as people whose families have lived in Westborough since the town was founded.
Westborough Friends of Facing History and Ourselves invites you to become a traveler in your own backyard.
Help us collect the stories of how and why we find ourselves here. What is the origin of your name? What is your story?
Who are our neighbors? Let's work together to get to know one another better. The goal of this project is to publish a living journal for our community - a book that includes all our varied stories - a celebration of us!
